Planting the seeds of success in Darlington

Young people at St Cuthbert’s Care’s Auton children’s home in Darlington are looking forward to enjoying the fruits of their labours. At a recent house meeting they decided to join the popular ‘grow your own’ trend, following on from the success of the rhubarb already being grown, and create their very own fruit and vegetable patch.

In just one weekend out came the spades and forks, up came the turf – which was carefully transferred to another area of the garden – and the hard work began.

With early seedlings now warming up, plans are in place to plant out sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, spring onion, lettuce and strawberries and hopefully maintain a rolling planting programme throughout the year.

Home Manager Dianne Hewison said: “It’s great to see the young people taking an interest in home growing. I think they’ll get great satisfaction from it, especially when they can finally eat the results!”
