Green-fingered young people at St Cuthbert’s Care’s Auton House children’s home in Newcastle enjoyed gardening so much last year they’ve gone bigger and better.
From a small plot in the back garden they are now the proud owners of an entire allotment in the heart of West Denton and within easy walking distance of their home.
“We had a small plot in the back garden last year where the young people were able to grow their own veg and they loved using them in recipes” said Acting Manager Donna Sawyers.
“Two of our lads in particular love gardening and every time we ask what they’d like to do they tell us they’d like to do more. We’re very grateful to get the allotment site so quickly. It’s a bit overgrown at the moment but neighbouring allotment holders have offered their services to the young gardening team to help them to develop the land and make a fresh start and we’re looking forward to learning from such experienced people.”
Once up and running there are plans to add a shed, greenhouse and a pigeon loft for rescue pigeons. The young people just need the equipment to get started now so anyone who has any surplus gardening equipment clogging up their sheds please contact Donna on 0191 264 8925.
