Enjoying a new start at Auton House allotment

Young residents at Auton House in Newcastle can now get stuck in to the worlds of gardening and pigeon keeping at their new allotment in West Denton.

The overgrown allotment has been cleared of rubbish, rubble, glass and brambles by Residential Care Officer Ray Fenwick who even unearthed his very own historical structures – two very dilapidated greenhouses!

Now safe and clear the staggering 18ft by 40ft site is the responsibility of the young people at Auton House who will be drawing up a plan and setting planting schedules on their gardening calendar. As the inclusion of a pigeon loft is included in the plan one young resident has been a regular on site working with fellow allotment holders to learn more about the art of pigeon keeping.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing the allotment come to life,” said Ray. “It will make a huge difference for the kids giving them a new hobby, seeing them through the school holidays and keeping them fit as well.”
