Independent living skills are a hit with our holiday makers

Staff at the Alan Shearer Short Break Centre took delivery of a host of new equipment recently, aimed at providing good quality and consistent independent living skills for holiday guests.

Among the items, were two brand new flat-screen televisions, bought to ensure that guests can make the most of their viewing entertainment, especially with the change over to digital television.

In addition, a new crockery cupboard has been installed, and a new toaster purchased, to enable disabled guests to develop everyday skills such as learning how to stack crockery properly to avoid breakages and supervising their own cookery.

“Learning independent living skills is great fun for guests but it does take its toll on the equipment,” explained Centre Manager Pam Jobling. “Skills which many of us take for granted can be a real challenge for many disabled people either due to limited mobility or learning difficulties which is why being able to take full advantage of these resources while on holiday can make such a difference for them. We also provide one-to-one care for our guests to enjoy more independent outings too, which always go down a treat.”
