Residents’ futures secured as St Cuthbert’s Care takes over Holy Cross Care Home

We are pleased to announce that we have successfully completed the purchase of Holy Cross Care Home in Sunderland; thus safeguarding 130 years of quality care provided by the Little Sisters of the Poor, and ensuring security and peace of mind for the residents currently living at the home.

The Little Sisters announced in February that they could no longer retain the 46-bed home, due to the diminishing number of Sisters. Mother Provincial said: “We are delighted to know that St Cuthbert’s Care will be continuing our work in caring for the sick and the elderly in this beautiful place in Sunderland.”

Austin Donohoe, Chief Executive of St Cuthbert’s Care added: “This is a momentous day for both St Cuthbert’s Care and Holy Cross. We are deeply privileged to take over the work of the Sisters; over the past 130 years they have devoted themselves completely to God and have acted selflessly in supporting the poor and the elderly. Their dedication is nothing less than inspirational.”

Having successfully taken over the running of Holy Cross, we now face a number of challenges; aiming to maximise the number of registered beds available, secure full occupancy and will shortly be applying for nursing registration. Plans are also afoot to develop a specialist wing for dementia care.

We are now taking referrals for Holy Cross. Interested people can arrange to visit the home by calling us on 0191 228 8000.
