Watching Team GB on television inspired Holy Cross residents to stage a championship of their own last week. The long green carpet was rolled out, bowls were polished and the challenge got under way.
Activities co-ordinator, Elizabeth Lafferty, was on hand to keep the competitors in order while John Briggs, whose wife Margaret has been a resident of the home for 3 years, acted as referee.
For less mobile players, a special bowling aid was available but the aiming was still down to skill and maybe a bit of luck. Everyone thought that former Durham County bowls player Olive Thompson would have the advantage but in the end it was resident of ten years Harriet Baitey who took the gold medal.
There were prizes for all the finalists, but the medals were not the sort you would keep for long – gold, silver and bronze were all chocolate 
underneath.
