Staff and residents of Holy Cross Care Home in Sunderland said a fond farewell and a big thank you to June Konizewski this week after 27 years loyal and unstinting service.
June who used to work for Littlewoods, took early retirement back in 1984 but was not ready to sit back and relax. When a friend, who was about to retire from her role as receptionist at Holy Cross recommended her as a replacement, she was happy to take over.
She and her husband Joseph worked together as volunteers at Holy Cross under the Little Sisters for many years not only on reception, but also helping to organise garden parties and accompanying residents on outings. Following her husband’s death, June continued to volunteer at the home and was our regular Monday receptionist. She has made many lasting friendships during her time there and will be greatly missed by staff and residents alike.
Holy Cross activities co-ordinator, Liz Lafferty organised the get together to mark June’s retirement and everyone enjoyed a trip down memory lane as they sang some of her favourite songs.
Amanda Head, the manager of the home, presented June with a farewell gift from all her friends and colleagues and Nicola Milne representing St Cuthbert’s Care, presented her with a lovely bouquet of flowers. June was very touched by the reception; saying she would miss everyone but that the time was now right for her to spend more time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
