Green fingered residents at Holy Cross are all smiles now that the weather has improved enough for the seedlings they potted several weeks ago to leave the protection of the greenhouse.
The little seedlings quickly grew into healthy plants, but, as the weeks went by, the lack of sunshine and struggling temperatures meant the young plants – and the residents – had to stay indoors. When the sun eventually shone, though, there was an instant garden waiting to transform their patio into a riot of colour.
Now that summer has finally arrived, the residents look forward to pottering among their pots every day, making sure the blooms are always looking their best. One of the biggest gardening fans at Holy Cross is 98-year-old Ruth who thoroughly enjoyed her potted plants at home and now has a whole set of new plants to tend to.
Holy Cross Activity Co-ordinator, Liz King who helped with the planting, said, “Ruth gets so much out of caring for the plants. Every day she can, she’s out on the patio watering, feeding and generally keeping an eye on her beloved plants. All this TLC has definitely paid off, too; we think we have some of the finest plants in Sunderland!”
There are currently a limited number of nursing and residential places available at Holy Cross. If you are interested in finding out more, or would like to arrange a visit, please call our Family Liaison Manager, June Spoors on 0191 228 8000.
