Gannin’ alang to St Catherine’s

‘Twas on the 7th June that St Catherine’s residents got together to sing the Blaydon Races and take a look back at how things had changed since eighteen hundred and sixty two.

Even though it was a few days early, everyone enjoyed getting together to celebrate the anniversary of the Blaydon Races which took place 151 years ago.

Colourful photos showing some of the items used in the Victorian era and some of the local characters featured in the famous song were displayed around the lounge to encourage discussion and there were quite a few renditions of the famous song, too.

Tom, one of the residents taking part in the reminiscence event, said: “I used to have a lovely voice when I was young and when I was in the Forces everyone used to ask me time and time again to sing the Blaydon Races. Well, I sang what I could, but I never knew all the words. I’ve learned a few more here today, though.”

The Blaydon Races reminiscence afternoon is part of a regular programme of events organised by St Catherine’s dedicated Activities Co-ordinator, Richard Dobinson.
