Alan Shearer has been expressing his thanks to supporters playing in his Foundation golf tournament at Close House this week.
Paying tribute to fellow golfers taking part in his third annual charity golf day he said: “Without those guys being so kind and generous these days wouldn’t go ahead and the Centre wouldn’t function properly.”
As a thank you for their support all players from the 22 teams taking part each received a unique memento of a specially packaged, England ’96 football shirt commemorating England’s 4 -1 win over the Netherlands and individually signed by Alan. These are the last such shirts available.
Alan’s former Newcastle United teammate, Rob Lee, was among the 80-plus players taking part in the event for Close House Golf Club members and their guests.
“It’s a fantastic charity close to Alan’s heart,” said Rob, “It’s great to be able to give something back.”
This year’s tournament is expected to raise in the region of £40,000 for the Foundation to help it to fund specialist facilities and extend resources for disabled children and adults at the Alan Shearer Centre.
“You just have to go up there and see the pleasure and the smiles on everyone’s faces to realise that we’re doing something special here,” said Alan.
