The British weather this summer hasn’t stopped our Holy Cross residents from having their weekly game of bowls.
The home’s activities coordinator Clare Quinn says the Wednesday afternoon session of carpet bowls is proving very popular. “There are 15 to 25 residents turning up to play every week,” she said, “We make two teams and hold a competition.”
When the sun does eventually come out Clare has prepared a gardening session with some balcony planting in mind, and for those residents who prefer a more pampering pastime she is arranging manicure or pedicure sessions.
Meanwhile, there has been some reminiscing work going on at the home after residents read Growing Up in Sunderland During the Blitz, a book by Clare’s dad, Jack Blackburn, which features local places and events. Everyone enjoyed hearing about the locations they knew in their youth and now Clare would like to extend this into some more visual prompts.
“I’m trying to make a memory board to display in the activities room at Holy Cross,” says Clare, “So if anyone has any old photos or memorabilia we can copy and put up it would be great to show them.”
If you have any photos or artefacts which can be displayed at Holy Cross Home please contact Clare on 0191 567 0862.
