“Aal the lads ‘n lasses” at St Catherine’s have been having a sing-along to some traditional Geordie folk songs today.
Activities coordinator, Richard Dobinson, organised some special entertainment at the care home on the anniversary of the day celebrated in the classic Geordie Ridley song, The Blaydon Races.
As well as recordings of some well-known local standards, like Cushie Butterfield and Keep Yer Feet Still Geordie Hinny, the residents heard some North East poetry and Richard led a talk on the history of the Newcastle Hoppings fair from its origins as a temperance festival on the Town Moor.
Later in the afternoon live singing duo Chris and Kelly Rocks provided a carnival atmosphere when they performed an eclectic set of numbers including some Vera Lynn, Elvis, Tony Christie, Nancy Sinatra, and even a little bit of Lady Ga Ga, for everyone to enjoy!
Richard is planning more special events at St Catherine’s for National Care Home Open Day on Friday 20 June. To find out more please call our family liaison manager, June Spoors, on 0191 228 0111 or to make an appointment to visit us at another time.
