The gift of sound and vision

Classic tunes by Englebert Humperdinck, Peters and Lee, Harry Secombe and Jim Reeves, played in the original 12-inch record format, are set to entertain St Catherine’s residents after the generous donation of a stereogram to the home.

Resident, George Graham who will be 99 this month, donated the Grundig radio and record playing equipment along with a selection of long playing albums for use in our Newcastle care home’s communal lounge and activity room.

The vintage stereo will be safety tested before it is put into full use but the piece is in working order and is already making a welcome addition to the home’s furniture.

“It’s great for everyone to be able to have the benefit of George’s stereogram and we are looking forward to playing some of the old records on it,” says St Catherine’s Activity Coordinator, Richard Dobinson.

Among the donated collection of vinyl discs is the soundtrack to the 1958 film adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway production of South Pacific which is bound to get toes tapping.

Residents thoroughly enjoyed their latest viewing of another musical film classic, Guys and Dolls from 1955, when it was shown recently on the new big display screen in the lounge.

“When we screen films it’s nice to make it a bit of an occasion so we’ll have ice-cream and popcorn,” says Richard.
