The lamps are going out all over Europe

The Royal British Legion is marking Britain’s entry into the First World War one hundred years ago with a Lights Out ceremony and a host of events across the UK today.

Holy Cross Home’s activities coordinator, Clare Quinn, held a news review this morning with residents looking at copies of newspapers from this day a century ago. Commemorations of the day that Britain joined the First World War are also set to be a low key affair at St Catherine’s in Newcastle with residents listening to a recording of the Last Post following some sensory reminiscence sessions organised by Jack Kilday, the home’s activities assistant. Most residents were not born when the First World War broke out but grew up in its aftermath and have lived through its legacy.

Artefacts and memorabilia from both World Wars are being collected and are on show at St Catherine’s as part of the home’s reminiscence work with our residents and new additions for display are always welcome, says the home’s activity coordinator, Richard Dobinson.

Richard has been planning a military commemoration event to be held at St Catherine’s at the end of August when the home will be decorated with union flag bunting and there will be remembrances of war by guest speakers.
