Holy Cross residents are set to see the giant Seaham statue of a British Tommy designed to commemorate World War I.
Clare Quinn, the Sunderland care home’s activities coordinator, is planning the bus trip with some of the proceeds from the mock auction held at Holy Cross at the weekend which raised a magnificent £800.
The impressive 9.5 foot statue, entitled Eleven ‘O’ One and designed by local artist Ray Lonsdale, has been the subject of a fundraising campaign by the local community who want to keep the loaned artwork permanently in the town.
“The plan is to drive along the coast, stop and have a look at the statue, take lots of photos, and have a cup of tea or an ice-cream depending on the weather,” says Clare.
Money raised during Saturday’s sale will also be used to hire entertainers for events at the home as well as to purchase some nostalgia quiz books.
“The Holy Cross bunch are avid quizzers but I’m running out of questions!” joked Clare.
