Care home residents meet Tommy

Residents from Holy Cross have been on a trip to the coast to see the giant World War I memorial sculpture of a British soldier, locally named Tommy.

The visit was organised by the Sunderland care home’s activities coordinator, Clare Quinn, who took the first group of residents on the outing last week.

“The trip to Seaham was a huge success,” said Clare. “We were extremely lucky with the weather.”

The steel sculpture, by local artist Ray Lonsdale and officially called 1101, was inspired by World War One and is named to reflect the first minute of peace. Local residents raised the funds to keep the memorial permanently after it was initially loaned to the town.

Clare said the Holy Cross residents really enjoyed their trip out. “We visited Tommy then went for ice-cream on the harbour. Can’t wait to do it again!”, she said.
