Residents have packed up their troubles and hung out the washing on the Siegfried Line in an afternoon of entertainment in recognition of World Alzheimer’s Day this week.
St Catherine’s residents donned bowler hats and waved union flags as Maggie Newman performed her World War II tribute act at the care home which included sing-along numbers such as Bless ’em All, Lay Down Your Arms and Knees Up Mother Brown.
The Newcastle home’s activities coordinator, Richard Dobinson who is a Dementia Friends Champion, also gave a talk about the personal impact of dementia, understanding the condition and what communities can do to help. The event was organised by Richard for St Catherine’s residents and their families to highlight the international Alzheimer’s awareness day on Sunday.
Maggie concluded her show with rousing renditions of Land of Hope and Glory, God Save the Queen and a poignant moment of reflection with a recording of the Last Post.
