Care home salon gets a makeover

A visit to the hairdressers now offers a mirror to the past for residents at St Catherine’s care home.

Photos of perfectly coiffured film stars of the 40s and 50s and some pictures of 60s and 70s hairstyles have transformed the walls of the care home’s salon along with adverts for old-fashioned products like Brylcreem, setting lotions and pomades.

Now residents who drop in for a cut and style or short back and sides can reminisce about popular trends of the past – and some of the convoluted methods and styling equipment required to achieve the desired look!

The home’s visiting hairdresser, Patricia Burn, said that the new decorations in the salon had been a great talking point for her clients.

“My regular customers noticed the pictures straight away and they brought back lots of memories. Some of the more elaborate hairdressing equipment from times past certainly raised a laugh too!” she said.

St Catherine’s resident, 102-year-old Mrs Mack, agreed that a trip to the salon for a little primping and pampering always lifts the spirits and makes her feel good.

“The salon is so handy and having my hair done every couple of weeks makes me feel so much better, it’s like a new lease of life!” she said.

The hairdressing salon at Holy Cross Home in Sunderland is set for a similar new look soon when it gets its own gallery of vintage style photos.
