Youngsters reminisce with old folk

Residents at St Catherine’s have been learning from the past after pupils brought some “show and tell” artefacts to the home.

A compilation 1960s rock and roll LP record featuring Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry and a silver ink well dating from the ’40s were a couple of the items brought into the home by students this week.

St Catherine’s activities coordinator, Richard Dobinson, asked volunteers from Newcastle High School for Girls and Sacred Heart School in Fenham to bring in an old item which they could talk about to the residents and start a discussion.

“I thought the project would be good for the pupils and the residents,” said Richard. “I asked the girls to pick something from the past and to research it and then to bring it in and talk about it with our residents. This was a great start to a reminiscence session.”

Pupils from the two schools take turns to visit St Catherine’s and help during afternoon activities at the home.
