“Being treated with respect”, “Privacy” and “Still being able to go to Mass” were among the observations made by Holy Cross residents during a Dignity Action Day event held at the home this week.
The National Care Forum initiative inspired activities coordinator, Clare Quinn, to ask our Sunderland care home residents what the word “dignity” means to them. Their responses led to the creation of a “digni-tree” collage of thought provoking remarks and discussion points to display on the wall.
“The staff look at what I can do rather than what I can’t do,” said Vera, “Showing interest in people,” commented Harriet, while Rosina mentioned: “Being allowed to do certain things for yourself”.
Holy Cross residents were treated to some delightful, dignity cupcakes commissioned by Clare from a creative friend, Ashleigh Fitzpatrick, who inscribed each individual cake with a different word relating to the theme.
The dignity discussion forum and tea party took place on the Action Day on Sunday following a morning of entertainment by the one-man variety show performer, Allen Cutler.
Meanwhile, our St Catherine’s care home in Newcastle is holding its dignity awareness event today, Wednesday, when friends and family are invited to discuss their own views and share an afternoon tea. Entertainment will be provided by singer, Dale Meeks.
