Love has been on the lips of our Newcastle care home residents during a romantic interlude sharing cakes!
Heart-shaped, coconut English madeleines were shared around during a Valentine’s inspired afternoon, while the ever-popular and versatile performer, Dale Meeks, sang a medley of love songs to entertain residents, families and friends.
An eight decade long enduring love was also being celebrated by a couple who live together at St Catherine’s and who commemorated 55 years of marriage on Boxing Day 2014. Tom and Agnes Armstrong have known each other since they were aged five when they both started at the school attached to St Dominic’s Priory in Shieldfield, Newcastle.
Their son, John, told the home’s activities coordinator, Richard Dobinson, that the pair were married at St Dominic’s in 1959 following a period away from the region during which Tom went to do his National Service in Nottinghamshire and Agnes joined the Land Army in Carlisle.
“Boxing Day was chosen as flowers were not permitted on the altar during Advent,” said John. “The rest, as they say, is history, with a lifetime close to their roots, save for a four-year Civil Service posting in Scotland at the end of the ’60s. A story not untypical for their generation but quite a contrast to today’s more transient age …”
Richard is always keen to hear our St Catherine’s residents’ life stories and to share and compare interesting tales during his reminiscence sessions at the home.
