Food for thought at Parkhead

Our day centre users at Ashington have been proving that they are a brainy lot during a testing time at Parkhead.

The Big Brain Show, performed by the Lawnmowers Theatre Company, was designed to help an audience understand how our brains work, how to use them and keep them healthy and incorporated some fantastic props – including a giant brain!

Following the theatrical presentation, the Company returned to Parkhead two days later with their interactive workshop and quiz. Part of the exercise was based on what the centre users had seen in the show and featured taste tests and a “feely bag”, where participants had to put their hand in a sack and guess the object inside.

“It tested our centre users quite a bit and was a real challenge,” said Parkhead support worker, Hannah Chappell, “But they did really well.”

Lawnmowers is a Gateshead-based company run for and by people with learning disabilities and the Big Brain Show and workshop was created “because our brains are amazing”! At the end of the session everyone was given an information booklet to take away.

Parkhead service user, Christine Laws, said she was impressed with the event. “I liked it all, but especially the music and dancing and everyone joining in. I liked the big brain that was here as well,” she said.
