Residents at St Catherine’s have been receiving good fortune wishes in an event with an Oriental theme.
Our Newcastle care home’s regular tai chi instructor, Wendy Chin, swapped her track suit for a traditional silk outfit when she came to give residents an illustrated guide to Chinese New Year celebrations.
Wendy showed residents satin costumes and Chinese artefacts including ornaments, writing tools and an album from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She reminded everyone about the tradition of giving lucky red envelopes which usually hold a monetary gift and symbolise good fortune, before writing everyone’s name for them in Chinese characters.
Residents also viewed footage of the traditional street celebrations which marked the arrival of the Chinese Year of the Goat, 2015.
Wendy will be back at St Catherine’s for her popular tai chi exercise sessions on March 19 and 24.
