We have been “Making it Happen” in celebration of International Women’s Day followed by Mothering Sunday at our Newcastle nursing home this month.
St Catherine’s Activities Coordinator, Richard Dobinson, helped mark the world-wide event by giving a talk on the origins of the Women’s Day movement which is commemorated in different countries in a variety of ways, from a general celebration of respect and appreciation to focusing on women’s economic, political and social achievements.
The official United Nations theme for 2015 was “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture It!” and was promoted “Making it Happen” through social media. As part of our celebrations singer, Natalie, performed some songs from the ’60s as a reminder of that era of women’s emancipation.
Ladies again were the centre of attention during St Catherine’s Mothers’ Day events at the weekend. Following a discussion led by Richard on the history of the celebrations popular crooner, Dale Meeks, entertained with some Frank Sinatra-style swing and love songs.
“It was a lovely day, with relatives, family and friends all coming to visit mums and grandmothers,” said Richard. “Everyone enjoyed the cakes made especially for the occasion by St Catherine’s chef for our afternoon tea.”
