A “street party” style celebration was held to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of VE Day at St Catherine’s.
Our Newcastle care home was furnished with bunting and a long trestle-style table bedecked in union flags. Residents, family and friends joined together to enjoy some old fashioned party games including pass the parcel, with the layers of wrapping being appropriately fashioned from 1940s newspaper.
The celebratory Victory in Europe event included a display of photos and memorabilia, a patriotic sing-along, quiz and a tea party following a sherry toast to the Queen with a rendition of the national anthem and There’ll Always Be An England.
“It was a fantastic day,” said St Catherine’s activities coordinator, Richard Dobinson. “Residents enjoyed sharing reminiscences of VE Day when they were young while Bob Scott, aged 98, chatted about wartime experiences with fellow war veteran John Farrelly who is 102!”
