Residents at our two nursing homes have been enjoying some special activities and entertainment arranged to mark World Alzheimer’s Day yesterday.
Events to recognise World Alzheimer’s Day and World Alzheimer’s month take place globally each year with the aim of raising awareness about the condition and our nursing homes had their own special way of marking the occasion.
At St Catherine’s in Newcastle, residents toe-tapped, clapped and sang their way through popular local songs performed by entertainer, David Minikin. “It’s great to hear the old songs again,” said one resident with a smile. “It takes me right back.”
Meanwhile, at Holy Cross in Sunderland, residents enjoyed a performance of traditional songs by singer, Andrea Pattison and are spending the entire month recalling their fond memories with special reminiscence sessions.
Activities Co-ordinator, Clare Quinn, said, “We’re busy gathering photos from as many residents as we can to make a collage so that everyone can enjoy taking a trip down memory lane together. It’s already proven to be a popular talking point with visitors and residents alike and we’re all looking forward to sharing our stories when it’s complete.”
