Letter to Santa still holds magic after 84 years

A letter to Santa, written by one of our Holy Cross residents in 1931, holds a story which still delights its author today.

Mary Parkinson wrote her letter on Christmas Eve and asked her older brother to post it to Santa for her. However, like most older siblings, her brother was a little mischievous and held on to the letter, only to admit to his prank many, many years later.

In the letter, Mary asked for a ninepenny flash lamp, complete with battery, and a fountain pen. Despite her brother failing to send off the letter, the magic of Santa won the day and she received both.

The letter itself was found earlier this year in a secret drawer of a hand-made box, crafted by Mary’s husband and is one of her most treasured possessions.

“Mary shared the story with us at Holy Cross and was delighted at everyone’s reaction,” said the home’s Activity Co-ordinator, Clare Quinn. “The letter is quite a talking point at Holy Cross!”
