Tension may be mounting ahead of the Euro 2016 Championships in France, but there was plenty of football fun a little closer to home for some of our service users.
A group of regular clients at our Parkhead Day Centre for adults with learning disabilities in Ashington have just taken part in a few friendly football matches and even took some silverware home for their troubles!
Going head to head with other local teams, goals were scored and dozens of friends and family came along to lend their support and see them presented with medals.
Parkhead Support Worker, Michael Hornsby, who also doubles up as coach and manager to the team, had little time to work with his squad before the match, but was delighted with their performance.
“The team played extremely well with little pre-match training and I felt so proud seeing them represent Parkhead,” said Michael. “They really gave their all and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship. They thoroughly enjoyed every minute and that’s what counts the most.”
Well done to players Michael, Stephen, Thomas, Christine, Simon and Mark and an extra shout-out to Laura who led the team supporters with such enthusiasm.
The matches were part of a special Ability 2 Play event held in Blyth which gave adults with disabilities the opportunity to try a range of activities and sports.
“We’d love to be part of the new league, which is still being set up,” added Michael. “Who knows where we’ll be with a little more practice!”
