Norma’s tea with the Queen (well, almost!)

Holy Cross resident Norma Johnson was among a select group of local nonagenarians to mark the Queen’s official birthday at the weekend.

Her special invitation to Sunderland Council’s official celebration event at the city’s Museum and Winter Gardens came after her sister, Rita, nominated her for one of the limited number of places available. Returning the surprise, Norma shared the occasion with her sister as her guest of honour.

The typically English event centred around a traditional afternoon tea and entertainment was provided by a children’s choir – which also held a surprise for Norma. Accompanying the choir on piano was no other than Ken Jolly who had played the organ at Holy Cross on many occasions, including at their regular Songs of Praise services.

To commemorate her historic involvement in marking the Queen’s 90th birthday, Norma had her photo taken next to a very life-like figure of the Queen and was presented with a special flag and commemorative coin, which she enjoyed sharing with fellow residents and staff on her return to Holy Cross.

“I’m delighted Norma was chosen to attend the special event,” said Holy Cross Activity Co-ordinator Clare Quinn. “She always makes an effort to make our new residents feel welcome and is generous to a fault. She truly is a special lady.”
