Residents of our St Catherine’s Nursing Home held the first of their story telling get-togethers yesterday morning over tea and biscuits.
The ‘My Story’ session is part of a new programme of bespoke activities at the home and encourages residents to share their life stories, reminiscences and interests together. It has already helped 94-year–old resident Kathleen McGowan to rediscover her love of creative writing.
Kathleen has been a prolific poet and writer for most of her life and has even had some of her work published. Although she hasn’t written for a number of years now, the new ‘My Story’ sessions have inspired her to pick up her pen again.
“I think sharing stories about our lives will be really interesting,” said Kathleen, pictured with a book of her poems, “and I’m making copies of some of my poetry to share as well.”
St Catherine’s Activities Co-ordinator, Kat Brennan, said “Chatting to our residents, I hear some fascinating stories about their experiences when they were younger. I know that sharing those stories will help bring back long-forgotten memories and I’m looking forward to hearing them myself.”
