Adults with learning disabilities attending our Parkhead Resource Centre in Ashington turned National Fair Trade Day into a geography lesson as they learned about the different countries that provide Fair Trade produce.
Everyone was fascinated by a specially-prepared presentation which looked at how people in developing countries worked and lived and how Fair Trade made sure farmers and communities were paid a fair price for the goods they produced.
After the presentation, everyone split into teams to taste-test and compare Fair Trade and non-Fair Trade produce including bananas, chocolate, tea, coffee and hot chocolate to see if they could tell them apart.
“Trying to decide which items were Fair Trade proved harder than you’d think,” said Parkhead Manager, Claire Graham, “but we agreed that the products were nicer – especially the chocolate! Bananas got the prize for being the easiest to guess with everyone thinking they had a better colour and texture.”
