Artwork created by adults with learning disabilities attending our Parkhead Resource Centre in Ashington has, once again, made it into a public exhibition at the Maritime Centre in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.
The nautical-themed project follows hot on the heels of their eye-catching model Tall Ship, which was displayed last year at the Maritime Centre, St Cuthbert’s Care head office and St Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle.
Their current masterpiece, featuring an enchanting mermaid and giant dream catchers, developed from a fun look at all things nautical and was created by our talented service users with the support of Parkhead staff and regular, visiting art tutor, Jan.
Everyone had great fun with the preparations for their latest creations, starting off with a little bit of beach combing to gather driftwood and shells. When work started on the dream catchers – cunningly disguised hula hoops with webs of string capturing a haul of nautical pictures and items –the fun continued, with everyone taking time to think up special personal messages to write on the dangling paper bottles.
“The idea for the messages in a bottle came from a discussion we had about some of the simple things in our life that we’d miss,” said Parkhead Manager, Claire Graham. “Not surprisingly, most of the things listed are food, but it was lovely to see Parkhead mentioned there, too. We’re so proud to have our work on show again.”
The artwork produced by our clever Parkhead crew is on display at the Newbiggin Maritime Centre for the foreseeable future.
