Makaton training has been delivered across our services, enabling staff teams to broaden their range of specialist communication skills.
Recreation Assistants at our Alan Shearer Activity Centre have embraced learning a whole new language and are now regularly using Makaton signs and symbols to support Centre members.
The entire staff team have attended Makaton training courses and jump at every opportunity to build on their knowledge – from everyday communication with members to leading Makaton-supported story sessions.
Recreation Assistant, Olivia, has enjoyed learning Makaton so much that she has now progressed to Level 2 and shares her knowledge with other members of her team whenever she can.
“We always have a Makaton ‘sign of the week’ on the Centre notice board,” said Olivia. “It’s a great way to raise awareness of the language programme and get people learning and using the signs and symbols.”
