International Day of Older Persons

On International Day of Older Persons, we’re delighted to celebrate the immense wisdom that comes with age and the positive impact our residents are continuing to have in their new nursing home communities.

George may be getting ready to celebrate his 97th birthday, but since moving into St Catherine’s in Newcastle, he has been delighting fellow residents with his weekly book and discussion group.

With a long career in education – including years spent teaching in Africa – and as a published author, George’s ability to hold an audience hasn’t dimmed in the slightest with up to 20 people gathering to hear his latest recollections.

His eloquent descriptions paint vivid pictures of places visited near and far and on a rainy Wednesday, George was able to whisk his audience to the stunning landscape and rich history of Lindisfarne.

“As older people, we have to accept that our bodies and minds are aging,” said George, “but I still feel 21 when I’m re-living some of the incredible experiences I’ve been lucky enough to have!”

People gathered in a group to listen to George recall his memories of a trip to Lindisfarne
