Sharing our thanks on Children of Foster Carers’ Week

As we mark Fostering Network’s Children of Foster Carers’ Week, it’s so rewarding to hear about the warm welcome extended families give to new foster children joining the household.

As well as our invaluable foster carers, birth children and grandchildren can play an important role in helping fostered children settle into their new home – and Sammy is a perfect example.

At just seven years old, Sammy is already a fantastic ambassador for the role of fostering, accepting without question the children she is growing up with and loving every minute of having extra playmates and mentors in her grandma’s home.

“She’s so loving,” says Susan, who has been fostering with us for over ten years and is currently one of our respite carers. “She is so personable and loves everyone, but it’s not at all one-sided.  The fostered kids who come into our family love Sammy just as much.

“One fostered young person in particular has been a really positive influence on Sammy, encouraging her to take up a hobby she’s really passionate about.”

And Sammy’s acceptance and friendliness extends beyond her grandma’s house when our YoungStars events take place – social get-togethers often shared by birth and fostered children.

“She’s been to quite a few YoungStars events and is so excited to meet up with the other children and young people she now sees as friends. She absolutely loves it!” added Susan.

We’d like to say a really big thank you to Sammy and all children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren for everything you do for fostered children and young people. Fostering wouldn’t be the same without you.
