Shared passion grows into festival performance

Harry with an accordion at a folk session

As part of this year’s Learning Disability Week and its theme ‘Do You See Me?’, we’re sharing stories from across our disability services that celebrate the people we are proud to support.

Members of our Hub@Parkhead Day Centre in Ashington really enjoy sharing their hobbies and interests with each other, so when Harry mentioned his passion for folk music, it was the perfect opportunity to make it a regular feature.

As a member of the Marras and Mariner’s choir, Harry’s love of music was already well known, so when he suggested giving folk music a try, fellow members were quick to give the idea a definite thumbs up.

Since they started, the weekly sessions have been so popular that they’ve led to a fantastic opportunity for Harry and his friends to perform later this year at the Headway Come On Down Festival — a free festival designed by and for people with learning disabilities. What better opportunity for each person to be seen, heard and appreciated!

Look out for festival dates this autumn, then pop along to listen to Harry and his group sing popular songs like Blaydon Races, The Lambton Worm and Row, Me Bully Boys. They’d be over the moon with your support.
