a little daunting at first. What matters most to us is taking the time to get to know each person who comes to live in our homes as an individual.
Care Home Open Week gives an opportunity to share Maureen’s story and to show how, with the right support, life can continue to feel familiar, comfortable and full of choice.
When Maureen found she needed more day-to-day care and support, she made the decision with her family to move into residential care.
Local to the area, the family were already familiar with St Catherine’s nursing home and it became their first – and only – choice as they began their search. From the moment she arrived, it was the perfect choice for Maureen, too.
“It felt so homely right away,” said Maureen. “Everyone was so friendly and it just felt right.”
Relaxing in her room surrounded by some of her favourite possessions, Maureen feels settled and at ease.
“It doesn’t feel a lot different really — it’s my home and I’m happy here. I’ve got everything I need — my own room, television, my meals are made for me and I don’t have any washing up to do!” she laughed. “I still get out and about a lot, but if I’m in, the staff often come and chat to me, so I never feel lonely. Moving into St Catherine’s was the best thing I’ve done.”
If you’d like to find out more about residential or nursing care at St Catherine’s, the registered manager, Cheryl, would be happy to chat or arrange a visit. You can contact her on 0191 2452400 or email cheryl.kennedy@stcuthbertscare.org.uk.
