Bridging the generations

A student chats with Cathy

Budding new friendships are being formed across generations thanks to the first in a series of weekly visits to St Catherine’s Nursing Home by Year 12 students from St Cuthbert’s High School.

The group of six students spent time chatting and getting to know residents, listening to snippets from their fascinating lives and experiences. From published authors to careers that took them across Africa, residents had plenty of stories to tell, while the students shared their own ambitions, interests and aspirations for the future.

Along the way, both generations discovered common ground through a shared love of music, with conversations covering favourite artists, musical styles and memorable performances. The musical theme developed further with two of the students agreeing to share their musical talents by playing guitar during a future visit.

“It’s been lovely,” said Cathy. “They’ve been such a joy to speak to and listen to.”
