Food for thought during Real Bread Week

It may be Real Bread Week and, while many of our services are enjoying baking and eating their own bread, one of our children’s residential homes has gone gluten free.

Understanding and respecting other people’s differences is a topic that’s often explored at our home so, when staff member, Jayne, mentioned that she needed to eat a gluten free diet, our young people wanted to fully understand what it was like.

Preparing a buffet menu entirely made up of gluten free food – including gluten free bread, of course – our young people took part in a taste test. They agreed that most items were just as good, although they learned that choice was quite limited and items more expensive to buy.

“Jayne was really chuffed that everyone wanted to really understand what it was like to eat gluten free,” said home manager, Kerry. “They found it all very interesting, too – especially when the ice cream turned out to be totally delicious!”
