George sets up new book club

Resident reads to other residents at St Catherines Nursing Home

Although many of our residents at St Catherine’s nursing home are unable to read books themselves, a fellow resident’s love of books is making sure everyone is still able to enjoy stories, poetry and literature.

For 95-year-old George – who recently moved into St Catherine’s – there’s nothing better than sharing a love of reading with other residents who gather each week to hear him read a passage from his book collection.

And his book club regulars can’t get enough. What started off with George reading to one resident in her room has now grown to a popular book club.

“I’m so lucky to still be able to read books,” said George, who spent a lifetime working in the field of education. “I hope everyone who joins me for the readings gets as much pleasure from listening as I do from reading.”

With 14 residents gathering today to hear George read from ‘A wandering Nonagenarian’ – a book he wrote himself in 2019 – there seems to be no doubt that our residents are lapping it up.
